Shane-OKellyIt's Still a Tough Market - How Are You Going to Handle It?

by Shane O'Kelly, A.H. Harris President and CEO

It's hot here on the East Coast. In particular in New England, where for the first time in some years we have had multiple days in June with the temperature exceeding 100 degrees. Normally the hot, dry weather is welcome news for the construction business. But of late, it just seems to exacerbate our industry's already irritable state. As I ponder where we stand today, I remain convinced that although the recovery for the construction industry will be a long one, good companies will still find a way to succeed.

Here is my latest take on the market:

Kodi Klip - The Klip That Grips!
Innovative rebar tying solution is better, faster and safer.

Kodi Klip

Kodi Klips save time and labor - a typical 10,000 sf flatwork project usually requires 4 workers 1-1/2 days to tie rebar 1' on center. One worker using Kodi Klips can complete the same project in half the time.

Kodi Klips were recently used on the East Berkshire Bridge over the Missisquoi River in Franklin County, Vermont.

Here's what the bridge crew had to say about using Kodi Klips -

Steel Sense
By Pat Maillett

Steel prices are decreasing as we move into the third quarter; however, volatility still exists and prices remain up over 30% since January 1, 2010. There have been two relatively small decreases (~5%) from the major steel suppliers within the past 45 days. Scrap prices have dropped approximately 10% in the last month with some industry sources predicting it may decline modestly through July. It should not be assumed that the current pricing will be the norm for any prolonged period of time. Scrap steel for the moment seems to be the dominant driving force behind rebar pricing.

Polished Concrete Gains Momentum

By Clfford Platt, Vexcon

Vexcon Century Floor pic

Due to its aesthetics, low maintenance and ability to maintain that "new" floor look over many years, polished concrete has grown from a small product niche to a fast growing product category. Polished concrete has become the preferred flooring for large box and grocery store chains that want a floor that will perform well over long periods of time. When comparing life cycle costs of polished concrete to other flooring materials as well as the many "green" attributes a polished floor offers, it is easy to see why polished concrete has gained a loyal following among architects and owners alike.
